In 2005 the British and Irish Lions rugby union team toured New Zealand for the first time since 1993, suffering a 3?0 whitewash at the hands of the New Zealand All Blacks. It was the first time for 22 years that the Lions lost every test match on tour. This tour follows the 2001 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia and precedes the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa. The team was managed by former England international Bill Beaumont, coached by former England coach Sir Clive Woodward, and originally captained by Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll. O'Driscoll however suffered a controversial tour-ending injury two minutes into the first test and England captain Martin Corry took over the captaincy for the remainder of that match. Wales captain Gareth Thomas took over as captain for the rest of the tour. The tour was marked by controversy. New Zealand captain Tana Umaga and hooker Keven Mealamu were accused of a spear tackle on O'Driscoll and the matter was referred to the match citing commissioner, who found that there was no case to answer.

Excerpt: The 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification for the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) selected New Zealand to compete in a two-legged home-and-away playoff against Bahrain, the fifth-place team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for a spot in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. (Oceania is the only confederation that does not have an automatic place in the finals.) Its final round was the 2008 OFC Nations Cup. Consequently, New Zealand is also considered the OFC Nations Cup champion, and represented the OFC in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. This is the first OFC World Cup qualifying campaign since Australia's move from the OFC to the AFC. The first phase began at the 2007 Pacific Games in Samoa, with the football tournament doubling as an OFC World Cup qualifying competition. The gold, silver, and bronze medallists (New Caledonia, Fiji, and Vanuatu, respectively) advanced to the second phase. The FIFA website initially indicated that the top two sides from the round robin would advance to a play-off which would determine the qualifier, but the OFC articles did not include this round (with the round-robin winner advancing automatically).
